Get Involved!

Getting to know other students and professional ornithologists can sometimes be an intimidating experience. Students want to get involved but don’t know where to begin or who to talk to. This can sometimes be especially intimidating if you don’t yet know any ornithologists (e.g., young undergraduates). The Student Affairs Committee has been created to help address those (any many other) concerns.

One way you can begin networking with other ornithologists is by… you guessed it… getting involved!

  1. Join an AOU Committee

There are over 25 different committees to join with hundreds of ornithologists to meet! If you find a committee that interest you feel free to contact the committee chair for more information on joining.

  2. Volunteer at an Annual Meeting

Volunteers are a valuable part to every meeting held. It is a great way to meet people and it can give you sense of appreciation to the work that goes into every meeting. Information on how to get involved will be posted for each meeting held. See 2009 for an example.

  3. Presenting Research at Meetings

Contributing to the scientific community is an integral part of research. The AOU provides funds to help students contribute to their findings at annual meetings (student travel & presentation awards) or funds student research (research award).
